I was in the mood for french toast this morning and I had time to waste so I looked online for a few recipes. I found one for brown butter french toast and I decided to put a twist on it and it actually came out pretty good. You should have most ingredients on hand and if you don't, they can probably be substituted with something else. Here's what you'll need:
(This recipe yields about 5 slices)
1Tbsp and 1tsp all-purpose flour
1/3 cup milk
pinch of salt
1 egg
1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp white sugar
5 thick slices of bread
3 cups of crushed frosted flakes or a crunchy, tasty variant in a medium bowl
butter (just enough to cover the bottom of the pan)
2-3 Tbsp brown sugar (or enough to make a soft caramel with butter in the pan)
1) Mix the milk, egg, vanilla extract, 1/2 tsp brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, pinch of salt, and flour together in a medium bowl. (I added a splash or rum to mine)
2) Dip both sides of bread into mixture, just enough till it's saturated but not to where it's too soggy.
3) dip both sides in crushed crunchy goodness or your choice (I used crushed graham crackers for mine)
4) Cook in brown sugar/butter caramel about 2-3 minutes on each side or until caramelized.
5) Chow the fuck down.
Hope yours is as good as mine was! Next time I want to try Texas Toast for the bread and maybe some Cap'n Crunch as the coating. Happy eating friends.
